17/4/24: The Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation (Glencree) will again partner with the John and Pat Hume Foundation and Community Dialogue, together with other Peace Summit 2024 Partners, and the John Hume and Thomas P. O’Neill Chair in Peace, to host “Forgiveness Redefined - In Conversation with Candice Mama".

This latest Youth Peace Summit event, which takes place at Ulster University Derry/Londonderry Campus on Thursday 25 April from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, will feature the life story of the motivating and inspiring South African Human Rights Activist and Influencer.

Candice Mama's work in forgiveness, reconciliation and trauma began with her own forgiveness of apartheid assassin and her father’s murderer, Eugene De Kock. Her story made international news and was the base of the acclaimed documentary "It's A Pleasure to Meet You". She is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including:

This Youth Peace Summit is part of an ongoing youth led initiative that engages young people aged 15-25 years old. The initiative was launched in 2022 by the Peace Summit Partners which include Glencree, the John and Pat Hume Foundation, Community Dialogue, Youth Action NI, Holywell Trust, Ulster University and Integrated Education Fund. It is supported by the International Fund for Ireland.

Earlier work included a series of in-depth consultation events with over 700 peacebuilders, local communities and young people from across Northern Ireland and the border counties who gave their views on progress made in the 25 years since the signing of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, and the steps still to be taken in relation to the Northern Ireland peace process.

These learnings were the focus of a Peace Summit 2023 event entitled "The Unfinished Business of Peace & Reconciliation". Consultation responses were also distilled and included in the Peace Summit Report – A Call to Action published by the John and Pat Hume Foundation, with the support of the Peace Summit Partners and the Department of Foreign Affairs, which was presented with further panel and roundtable discussions in May 2023.
