Gateway Project Youth Leadership Exchange Comes to Glencree

26/6/25: The Glencree for Peace and Reconcilition (Glencree) had the pleasure of hosting over 25 young people representing both Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities from Pyla, Cyrpus, together with their Irish peers as part of the Gateway Project Youth Leadership Exchange being held in Ireland this week. Joined by the project’s youth leaders, Glencree’s Political Dialogue team facilitated the youth group in a day of dialogue and reflection, exploring practical leadership skills to build trust, understand difference and share lived experiences.

The Gateway Project is an international peacebuilding initiative that uses sport and cultural exchange to foster understanding and reconciliation. Developed by Detective Chief Superintendent Brian Woods of An Garda Síochána and supported by Erasmus+, the project is coordinated by the Centre for International Learning & Leadership in partnership with the Community Council of Pyla, Belvedere Youth Club, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin and other partners.

Glencree’s involvement with the Gateway Project began earlier this year at a special event in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin to mark the premiere of 'A Town Called Pyla'. This documentary film by Gerry Gregg tells the story of peaceful coexistence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the village of Pyla. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with Glencree’s Pat Hynes joined Chief Superintendent Brian Woods, former Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan and broadcaster Bryan Dobson. The discussion highlighted the Gateway Project’s focus on reconciliation through sport, culture and dialogue, and reflected on Pyla’s example in the context of wider peacebuilding efforts.

Earlier this month, Glencree also welcomed the Gateway Project team during their advance visit in planning for the Youth Exchange. This LinkedIn post by Kelley Bermingham, St Patrick's Cathedral, captured the excitement and anticipation as the students prepared to travel from Cyprus and join the young Irish delegation.

Glencree looks forward to further supporting the Gateway project and its work with this next generation of young leaders committed to dialogue and lasting peace.

"Thank you #Glencree, Pat, Naoimh and Terri for the very warm welcome to our Cypriot and Irish young people. It was a truly informative session on the challenges, resilience and constant understanding that's required to achieve and maintain peace. Thank you for your continued support of the #Gatewayproject, promoting young voices, better communities and the common bonds of humanity. #BYC (Belvedere Youth Club) have been great partners in this endeavor."
