Women are key drivers of peace and progress. Yet, many still face barriers to having their voices heard and influence felt — especially in communities impacted by conflict.
Our Women's Leadership programme aims to empower women on the island of Ireland who have experience of political conflict, and its effects, to expand their influence and become active leaders in the political processes that promote peacebuilding on the island of Ireland and internationally.

Through Glencree’s experiences in conflict and post conflict societies, we have come to learn that women in these typically patriarchal and militaristic societies often see themselves as responsible for their families' welfare and safety.
In the Northern Ireland context, limited education and opportunities, ongoing violence and mental health challenges can leave many women in marginalised communities with little chance to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of those around them. Political stalemates and the impact of Brexit have further strained social and economic development, putting pressure and tension on intra and inter community relationships. In this environment, many women are yet again left without a voice.
As a committed advocate of UN Resolution 1325 and a member of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, Glencree supports Ireland’s Fourth National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, which recognises the essential role women play in building lasting peace in their communities.
The Glencree Women’s Leadership Programme builds networks and relationships among women from marginalised communities impacted by political conflict. This all-island initiative brings together women from diverse generations, traditions and ethnic backgrounds, both north and south of the border, and from global conflict zones.
Through safe, inclusive spaces for dialogue, mediation and peer coaching, the programme helps women network, collaborate, share knowledge and support one another. This empowers them to build confidence, amplify their voices and actively contribute to policy and decision-making relating to peacebuilding in their communities and beyond.
Our Women’s Leadership programme is built on three core pillars, each of which represents a key focus of our efforts:

This Courageous Women podcast, undertaken on behalf of Glencree by Dr. Shirley Graham, features interviews with community leaders in Northern Ireland who have found mutual respect through deep dialogue and critical thinking at Glencree. Participants discuss the issues stemming from the legacy of the conflict and what needs to change to create a more peaceful society.
