Set in the unique environment of the Glencree Centre, and drawing on Glencree's unique experience and perspective in transforming conflict and practical peacebuilding, these workshops take students on a journey that explores the historical roots of division, the period of the Troubles, the emergence of the peace process and shift from paramilitary activities to dialogue.

The aim of the workshops are to:

  • Deepen understanding of the history, causes and impact of conflict on the island of Ireland
  • Explore the peace process and the role of dialogue in conflict transformation
  • Introduce the work of Glencree in facilitating confidential, cross-community dialogue
  • Experience the Glencree Dynamic Dialogue process
  • Encourage critical thinking about the challenges of reconciliation in post-conflict societies
  • Inspire students to apply learnings to other global or community conflict contexts.

  • An integral part of the workshops is the opportunity to engage in a facilitated dialogue session that is designed to mirror the confidential conversations that took place at Glencree in the lead-up to the peace process and subsequent implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. The Glencree Dynamic Dialogue experience enables students to gain an insight into how trust is built, perspectives are shared and understanding is fostered in deeply divided societies.

Over the course of the day, students also examine current and emerging issues such as Brexit, legacy and identity, the challenges to reconciliation in a post-conflict context and the role of key actors and structures in supporting peace.

To date, students from a wide range of academic backgrounds - including political science, international relations, conflict studies and leadership development - have taken part in the workshops. We have welcomed universities from across the United States, including institutions such as Harvard’s NSI, Arizona University, Villanova University and the University of Denver, among others.

Participants come away with a deeper understanding of Ireland’s peacebuilding journey, based on insights from the peace process and the day-to-day work of transforming conflict. They also gain lessons that can be applied to other divided societies around the world.

"Your work is humbling and powerfully inspiring. You have been at the table of so many crucial conversations of such profound importance and impact during your careers. We are indebted to the great work that you do." John F. (Jack) McCarthy, DBA, Associate Professor of Practice in Organisational Behaviour, Babson College, Massachusetts.
