Glencree Hosts Annual Hope & Ambition Picnic Outing

10/7/25: Sunshine, laughter and the sound of children playing filled the air at Glencree's annual Hope and Ambition picnic in Corkaigh Park last week. This years picnic brought together 90 residents from Clondalkin Towers Direct Provision Centre, including 34 women who participate in the Glencree Women’s Group at the centre and 56 children, for a day of connection, celebration and respite in nature.

In a gathering that reflected the heart and ethos of Glencree’s Hope and Ambition project, the picnic provided a supportive environment and sense of belonging for the women whose lives have been impacted by war, displacement and the challenges of Direct Provision. As the children played together in the open air, the women shared food and joined in some fun activities. There was no shortage of conversation, stories and warmth as they enjoyed time together, formed many new friendships, built trust and focused on their well-being.

Now in its seventh year, Glencree's Hope and Ambition project, supported by Mount Street Club Trust, initially started with women in Clondalkin Towers Direct Provision Centre. In recent years, it has expanded to support women living in St. Mary’s Centre and Ukrainian women at City West Hotel. The project focuses on inclusion, integration and healing through ongoing supports such as monthly women’s group meetings, trauma-informed wellness sessions and creative activities. Nature outings like the picnic have also become a vital part of this work. Facilitated by Glencree’s Louise Keating, with support from Marie Williams of the Young Mothers Network, this programme of ongoing activities offers a stable and trusted space for the women's group members in a constantly changing environment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the women and their children who joined this years annual picnic gathering and made it such a special day.
