Glencree & Dublin City Council to host ‘Africa Day 2021: Entanglements – Africa and Dublin City’

19/5/21: Glencree in association with Dublin City Council will host a celebration of Africa Day, the annual commemoration of the foundation of the African Union, on Tuesday 25 May. “Entanglements – Africa and Dublin City” will celebrate the relationship between the continent of Africa and the city of Dublin, the historical and current contributions to the city by African Irish communities and people of African descent, and the vibrant cultural heritage of Africa.
Hosted as part of Glencree’s Community & Intercultural Relations project, the event will be opened by Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu and presented by Councillor Yemi Adenuga, Meath County Council. Speakers will include: Cllr. Uruemu Adejinmi, Longford County Council; Prof Christine Kinealy, Director of Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute, Quinnipiac University, Connecticut; and Dennis Brownlee, Founder and President, African American Irish Diaspora Network. The event will also be addressed by representatives from Africa Solidarity Centre Ireland, AkiDwA, Roots in Africa-Ireland Network, Sports against Racism, Association of Mixed Race Irish and Front Line Defenders. It will also feature individual stories and creative contributions from Intercultural Ambassadors from the North East Inner City Intercultural Project and Dublin City Education and Training Board’s Education Service for Refugees and Migrants.
As part of the #AfricaDay2021 event, Glencree and Dublin City Council are also holding a children’s art competition inspired by What Makes you Smile? Open to children and young adults aged 0 – 17 submissions are welcome across 4 age categories: 0 – 6 ; 7 – 9 ; 10 – 13; 14 – 17. A One4all Gift Voucher to the value of Euro25 will be awarded to the winner of each age group. The closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday 21 May 2021.
