Remembering the 70's, 80s and 90s at Glencree
02/8/24: Reflections, shared experiences and memories from the recent re-union weekend as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Glencree have been captured in a moving video from the event.
Over 60 volunteers who contributed to the work of Glencree throughout the 1970’s, 80's and 90's joined founder members, neighbours from the Glencree valley, Board members and the staff team to mark five decades of peace and reconciliation work. This first in a series of celebratory events focused primarily on the founding and early decades of Glencree and was dedicated to acknowledging the contribution of the many volunteers who are part of Glencree’s history.
Contributing to the video, founding member and current Board Director, Geoffrey Corry, spoke of the bonding and life-changing experiences of the volunteers. Gail Varian and Sonja Tammen remembered the genesis and work that went into the Glencree heart mosaic as volunteers gathered together to repair it over the weekend. Former CEO, Ian White, welcomed the memories and learnings shared by the volunteers who came from across 15 countries to take part in the reunion as well as those who had stayed on and made Ireland their home in the 1980's - many of whom brought their children along to share in the weekend.
Oliver Quinn, a former Board member and farm advisor in the 1980's, spoke of 4 generations of family connections with Glencree and how coming together with the volunteers after 30 years was "like you're seeing their parents but its actually them". Glencree member and neighbour Jim Larkin highlighted the importance of Glencree to so many including the community in the valley and the great sense of place. As the weekend drew to a close, everyone gathered in front of the Bridge Building to plant an oak tree for the many volunteers and colleagues who contributed across the 5 decades, as Seán O’Gaoithin remembered James McLoughlin, Glencree's Farm Manager in the 1980s. James passed away in June 2024.
Further events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Glencree will continue throughout the year.
Ends.
