To Honour the Life and Contribution of our Founding Member, Col. Fred O’Callaghan

Even though he was a member of the Irish Army, Fred became committed to the peace efforts of the Glencree Centre particularly during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Sometimes he had to keep quiet in his professional life about this involvement. We all got to know him when he was a member of the Working for Peace group in 1972-4 and then joined the Glencree Centre as a founding ongoing member. We all remember his gentle, steady, friendly character.
Fred joined the Irish Army School of Music as a trainee bandsman at the age of 15 in 1942 and got to love everything about music, even composing his own music. He was particularly fond of Czech composers like Dvorack and Smetana and spent time in that country. He rose to become both the Conductor and Director of the Army Band for many years. So it was hugely appropriate that as an army man he joined Glencree in the fledgling peace efforts.
Fred died in 2024 on 5th October but donated his body to the UCD School of Medicine – a decision very typical of the man. That is why he was only finally laid to rest on Saturday 2nd May 2026 in Shanganagh Cemetery among his family and army friends. Both Geoffrey Corry and Gabrielle Brocklesby attended the burial to honour his contribution to Glencree over the years.
Two army musicians played the “”Last Post” to send him on his way.
May he rest in peace.
Tribute by Geoffrey Corry.
