Brendan Rogers is one of Ireland's most distinguished diplomats, bringing more than four decades of leadership and international experience in diplomacy, international development, multilateral affairs, and public policy. He retired from the Irish Diplomatic Service in 2024, having served as Deputy Head of the Irish Diplomatic Service/Deputy Secretary General at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Throughout his career, Brendan represented Ireland at the highest international levels, serving as Ambassador and Head of Mission to the Netherlands, Thailand (with accreditation to Myanmar), Uganda (with accreditation to Rwanda), Zambia, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). He also served in Boston as Vice-Consul of Ireland and at Ireland's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

As Deputy Secretary General, Brendan led Ireland's diplomatic response to the COVID-19 pandemic and had responsibility for political affairs, international development, economic diplomacy, Asia-Pacific relations, United Nations engagement, and strategic policy. He also led Ireland's successful campaign for election to the United Nations Security Council in 2020 and previously served as Director General of Irish Aid, overseeing a period of significant expansion that saw Ireland's international development programme recognised by the OECD as among the best in the world.

Brendan has extensive experience working with the United Nations agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and has played leading roles in international humanitarian response, global hunger initiatives, conflict recovery, and international justice.

Brendan enjoys the arts in general particularly cinema, literature, and the visual arts. He cycles and tries to remain fit. He has completed several marathons including Boston and New York, although he tells us those days are firmly in the past! He is an avid traveller and has almost completed the Camino.
