What Makes You Smile? Glencree & Dublin City Council Young Artist Competition Winners Announced

28/5/21: The winners of the Glencree & Dublin City Council Young Artist Competition have been announced. The winners are: Senan Duignan, age 6;  Nachikambi Favour Nnaemeka, age 8;  Conor Curtin, age 11; and,  Chloe Curley, age 17. The judges also awarded two additional prizes for ‘exceptional creativity’ to Sarah O’Gorman, age 11 and Murray Sheehan, age 17.

In the spirit of celebrating #AfricaDay2021, Glencree Intercultural & Refugee Programme, in association with Dublin City Council, invited young artists to create an artwork inspired by What Makes you Smile?  Twenty five entries were shortlisted in the Young Artist Competition. These included submissions from the youngest entrants Thomas and Rian, aged 3, through a range of pastels, oils and a photographic entry. A compilation of the shortlisted artworks was displayed as part of Africa Day: Entanglements – Africa and Dublin City with keynote address by Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu and featuring representatives of the Irish African communities in Dublin.

The artworks were judged across 4 categories, 0 – 6 ; 7 – 9 ; 10 – 13; 14 – 17,  by a panel including Greg Osborne, Joe Odiboh and Nadette Foley. In making their decision, the judges focused on artistic skill, creative expression, relevance to the theme of ‘What Makes You Smile?’ and overall impact.

The winner of each age category and the two ‘exceptional creativity’ artists will receive a One4all Gift Voucher to the value of Euro25. Chloe Curley and Conor Curtin will also receive a book entitled ‘Frederick Douglas and Ireland: In his own words’ by Professor Christine Kinealy who spoke at the Africa Day event. The book details the four months that the famous abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglas spent in Ireland in the 1840s, befriending Daniel O’Connell and other influential activists.

About the Judging Panel:

Greg Osborne:  Greg is a Branding and Design Consultant based in Galway. Greg primarily works with small businesses helping them to create branded experiences. Greg’s area of focus in design is Brand identity creation, Web design, and Service design. He also works as a Mentor for the Local Enterprise Offices in Galway and Limerick

Joe Odiboh:  Joe is a South African citizen, originally from Nigeria. Winner of the African Leadership and Excellence Award in Arts and Culture 2012, Joe is a contemporary artist with numerous paintings and has gained recognition with Peace III, New Urban Peace Collective sponsored by the EU. Recent works include his short story video contribution to The Maternal Gaze is an eloquent tribute to his mother, Mrs Theresa Ekowanye Odiboh, a scholar and a midwife, who inspired Joe’s journey as an artist and community activist. https:imma.ie/whats-on/the-maternal-gaze/

Nadette Foley:  Nadette is the Intercultural & Refugee Programme Manager at Glencree. She has been Director of the Irish Refugee Council and CEO of the Multi-Cultural Resource Centre – Northern Ireland. Nadette has an architectural design background and uses her creativity to improve her wellbeing and quality of life. Nadette loves travelling and observing visual and craft-based culture and heritage in other countries. She has been a volunteer visual artist at Tallaght Hospital Children’s Unit in their ‘Create While You Wait’ programme.
