Glencree & Dublin City Council online celebration of  ‘Africa Day 2021: Entanglements – Africa and Dublin City’

26/5/21: Glencree in association with Dublin City Council hosted a celebration of Africa Day, the annual commemoration of the foundation of the African Union, on Tuesday 25 May. ‘Entanglements – Africa & Dublin City: Voices of African Irish, Mixed Race Irish and African American Irish’ celebrated the relationship between the continent of Africa and the city of Dublin, the historical and current contributions to the city by African Irish communities and people of African descent, and the vibrant cultural heritage of Africa.

Funded by Irish Aid and Tomar Trust, the event was hosted by Cllr Yemi Adenuga, Meath County Counil, with keynote address by Lord Mayor of Dublin, Hazel Chu. It featured live online and recorded contributions from:

  • Naoimh McNamee, Glencree Centre for Peace & Reconciliation
  • HE Mr. Lahcen Mahraoui, the Ambassador of Morocco to Ireland, Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps
  • Prof Christine Kinealy, Director of Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute, Quinnipiac University
  • Dennis Brownlee, Founder & President, African American Irish Diaspora Network (AAIDN)
  • Lassane Ouedraogo, Africa Solidarity Centre Ireland (ASCI)
  • Jude Hughes, Association of Mixed Race Irish (AMRI)
  • Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi, Longford County Council
  • Sergeant Geraldine Greene Diversity and Inclusion Office, An Garda Siochana
  • Caroline Munyi, AkiDwA
  • Fidelis Mudimu, Front Line Defenders’
  • Amina Moustafa, Sports Against Racism Ireland (SARI)
  • Vicky Musitongo & Diane Ihirwe, Roots in Africa-Ireland Network

The event also featured artistic and musical contributions from Cherinet Ayele, Neo Gilson, Joe Odiboh, Mary Oyediran, Salome Mbuga,  Didier Ngaboyeka and members of the North East Inner City Intercultural Ambassadors; Jacinta Saloma, George Njeri, Daniel Kamenyezi.

As part of the #AfricaDay2021 event, Glencree and Dublin City Council also held a Young Artist Competition inspired by What Makes you Smile?. View 25 shortlisted entries here.
