12/1/22: We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Fergus Armstrong on the 11th  January 2022. A gentle man, a skilled lawyer and mediator, an advisor to the late Tony Ryan of Ryanair, a former partner at McCann Fitzgerald (one of Ireland’s leading Law firms), a former Board member at RTE and, over the last number of years, a good friend and advocate for Glencree.

Through the Tony Ryan Trust, Fergus supported the start-up and development of Glencree’s Intercultural Programme and recognised the importance of the interfaith dimension in an Ireland that was rapidly changing and needed us to be more welcoming and inclusive to the ‘stranger.’ As a mediator, he had a strong affinity with Glencree’s focus on dialogue and was actively concerned about the polarisation of politics, the erosion of democracy and the coarsening of political discourse in many countries around the world. More recently, Fergus supported a new programme in Glencree, through the Tony Ryan Trust, which aims to examine how we can strengthen democracy through ethical and respectful Political Discourse and we are glad that he lived to see it established.

This wonderful man left us too soon, but his contribution to Glencree and his kindness, tenacity and sharp intellect will always be cherished by those of us his friendship meant so much to.

The Board and Staff of Glencree extend our deepest sympathy to his children, Grace, Katy, Maggie and Frank, and the large extended Armstrong family in Dublin and Sligo.
