Africa Day 2022: ‘‘Many Faces of Africa! Richness of African Cultures and the contribution of people of African Descent to Irish Life’

19/5/22: Dublin City Council, in association with the North East Inner City (NEIC) and the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation is celebrating Africa Day 2022 by hosting a FREE fun celebratory event on Saturday 21st May from 10am to 2pm at Seán Mc Dermott Street Lower, Dublin 1, with support from Irish Aid.

This year’s event will be launched by Lord Mayor of Dublin Alison Gilliland, His Excellency Moroccan Ambassador Mr Lahcen Mahraoui, the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps and other members of the African Diplomatic Community and of the NEIC Africa Day Collective.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin said, “The African community plays an important part in the fabric of Dublin life. I look forward to welcoming people from all different backgrounds to join us in Dublin to celebrate the diversity and unity of Dublin’s African community and to increase this awareness of their beautiful culture.”

This will be followed by a World Café hosted breakfast during which individuals from the Dublin-African Diaspora will be invited to draft a Charter representing their views on key issues that impact their lives for engagement with Dublin City Council and other key stakeholders during the year.

Throughout the day’s celebration, a series of exhibitions and live entertainment activities will be held. This will include music from DJ Monte, Spoken Word by Neltah Chadamoyo,  and a workshop on ‘The Politics of Hair’ by Rosemary, Felicity and colleagues from Dignity Partnership. There will be ‘African Story Telling’ with Adekunle Gomez of the African Cultural Project and Asmae Ourkiya from Morocco. Somali, Congolese, Moroccan and other African Diaspora communities will display artefacts from their cultures and there will be African cuisine to sample.

We will have a multi-lingual poetry performance section by local school students, as well as kids and family African attire competitions and lots of food and fun!
